Often imitated but never duplicated, the wines of California are the new benchmark for the winemaking world.
It's rare that anything new is met with acceptance right away. It usually takes time, energy and - most importantly - devotees to the cause. In the case of California's wine production, however, overnight success gave way to the world of wine bowing down to a newly-anointed King. Let's talk Cali Wine!
Whether you are a fan of ethereal, Burgundian-style Pinot Noir and Chardonnay; rich and bold Cabernet and Merlot blends al la Chateau Margaux; vegetal, racy Sauv Blanc or carbonic, fruit punch-like Zinfandel, California has got a wine for you! Classic and powerful, all the way to way-out-there-weird, the winemakers of this great state keep drinkers guessing, but ALWAYS glugging.
What makes wine from California so special? The land! That's right, California is a veritable encyclopedia of terroir, terrain and climate. This means that, no matter what grape you want to grow or style of wine you want to make, California can make it happen (and probably do it better!). There's no better proof of this than the 1976 "Judgement of Paris" where Napa Valley Chard and Cab beat out the top Chateaus of Burgundy and Bordeaux. To quote the winning Chardonnay producer from Chateau Montelena, the late, great Jim Barrett, "Not bad for a bunch of kids from the sticks!" Simply put, the wines of California are AWESOME, and the best is yet to come!
